what is the difference between custom, made-to-measure, and benchmade?

Custom

Custom or to customize a suit, jacket or shirt means just that. You can select some options that are different from a normal “off the rack” product. This term is used often when one seeks something made for them.

Made-to-Measure

This process is also “custom” in which a tailor or clothier uses a pre-established block pattern (i.e., 40 regular). They have the ability to modify +/- several inches by the allowance outlined by the factory to make the item fit better than off the rack. There are limitations to these allowances and posture corrections, but this is an efficient way to enter the “custom” realm with a few limitations. Styling choices such as buttons, linings, contrast stitching, lapel and pocket treatments are available for selection in a number of options.

Benchmade

Our benchmade custom suits are crafted individually for each client according to a precise set of measurements. We begin the process by measuring each client, taking into account things like posture, where the suit will be worn, and individual needs. From here, we craft a unique pattern for each customer. We create a basted suit with a 4-week delivery, followed by assessment and adjustments taking 4-5 weeks. Final suits undergo thorough quality checks before swift delivery. Notably, these garments are handcrafted with over 40 hours of artisan craftsmanship, ensuring exceptional quality.

What is the process and how long does it take from start to finish?

Made to Measure

First fitting appointment takes roughly 90 minutes from fabric and styling selection to fitting. Delivery of suiting garments typically arrive in 4-6 weeks depending on fabric choice and season (shirts are roughly 3-4 weeks). *If you are new client and we opt for a fitting suit, this process takes 4 weeks roughly. This would be the initial time frame in addition to  the construction of the actual suit which is outlined at 4-6 weeks for delivery. If there are any minor alterations needed at final delivery, Tailored Gents covers this cost with an additional week turn time added.
